Fibre first

Three fibres carry most of this page: merino, pure cashmere and medium weight wool. Cashmere takes the top rung for handle, giving the lightest and softest finish at the neck, and it costs the most of the three. Merino does the daily work, warm for its weight and gentle against skin. Medium weight wool carries more body, which suits a long scarf that has to hold its shape. Alpaca, mohair, rabbit fur and angora appear in smaller numbers, and the fibre list is not complete.

Once the fibre is settled, width and length are what separate one scarf from another. A narrow rectangle wraps twice and tucks into a coat collar. Wide shawl styles sit across the shoulders and can be pinned or left open. The loop scarf has no ends to tie and sits close to the neck without bulk.
