Wool

One hundred and seven wool products, priced from $49 to $499 AUD, make up the hub. Of these, 56 are tagged women, 42 men, and 9 neither. The selection excludes merino, cashmere, and merino-cashmere blends, focusing on wool that sits outside those fibres. Boiled wool garments, which begin as knitted wool and are felted until the surface closes, appear here; the dense fabric holds its shape well but sacrifices some drape. Three narrower pages sit beneath: Women's Wool Cardigans, Women's wool, and Men's wool.

Warmth, weight and boiled wool

The choice inside this hub is between a standard medium weight wool knit and a boiled wool piece. A boiled wool garment starts as knitted wool and is then felted until the surface closes. The result is a dense fabric that holds its shape, at the cost of some drape.

A heavier, substantial knit

Medium weight wool is where warmth, durability and a substantial knit matter more than fineness. It suits colder days. The knit is heavier in the hand and the fabric has a more definite texture. Boiled wool goes a step further. Felting closes the knit into a dense sheet.

Why knitwear pills

The Woolmark Company describes pilling as loose fibres working to the surface and tangling into small balls, caused by friction during wear. Pills are not a fault. Removing them with a fabric comb returns the garment to a clean surface and stops the pills pulling more fibre loose.

Common questions

Where can I find wool knitwear in Australia?
Wool knitwear is sold in the two Knit-On Australia stores, at 520 Bourke Street in the Melbourne CBD and at 79 Glen Eira Road in Ripponlea. Both open 10am to 6pm, Monday to Sunday. The full range is also online, with shipping across Australia and free delivery over $150 AUD.
Are 100% wool jumpers good?
One hundred percent wool is good for warmth. The Woolmark Company notes that wool requires less washing than other fibres and is naturally stain resistant, odour resistant and crease resistant. Wool is heavier than a merino or cashmere jumper, and not the pick directly against sensitive skin without a layer underneath. A wool jumper washed against its care label felts under heat, moisture and agitation, and felting is irreversible; a jumper that is out of shape rather than felted normally reverts with the method in How to unshrink a wool jumper. A full fibre comparison is available at Merino or cashmere: how to choose.
What are the best Australian knitwear brands?
The store does not rank brands. What decides which knitwear suits a person is fibre and knit weight, not a label. A shopper choosing between two wool jumpers is better served by comparing how heavy they feel and whether the wool is soft enough for how they will wear it. Staff at either shop help with that in person.
